Welcome to Chesil House, owned and occupied by the Steel family for four generations. This exquisite 19th century venue sits on the banks of the River Itchen, in the heart of the historic city of Winchester.
Offering a welcoming and warm environment, Chesil House underwent an extensive refurbishment including many sympathetic architectural improvements during 2018. Fully licensed with resident caterers and state of the art audio visual technology – it is available for services, gatherings and events in a truly unique setting.
The Chesil Suite comprises three beautifully appointed spaces on the first floor, with commanding views over the fast flowing River Itchen and the Chesil House gardens, including our own private tributary. The Chesil Suite can also open out onto The Deck for an al fresco drink in the Hampshire sunshine.
Ideal for formal services and social gatherings from 10–100 people, The Chesil Suite’s light and spacious rooms include fully managed audio visual facilities. These can be used for music, photo slideshows, video display or Powerpoint presentations. Cameras can capture the live event to stream over the internet, allowing absent friends to feel part of the occasion, or we can record the event to create a wonderful momento. Afterwards, the Gathering Room provides a stunning location for informal conversations with refreshments.
For a more private function, The Garden Room provides an intimate space on the ground floor overlooking the Chesil House gardens and our private tributary of the River Itchen, which flows directly beneath your feet. Designed for flexibility, The Garden Room can be set up for a wide range of small events, services, or family catering for a maximum of 15 people. There is a screen for photos and a simple music system built in.

In partnership with our resident, award-winning caterers, The Little Kitchen Company, Chesil House is the perfect venue for catering and sharing time together.
Whether you opt for drinks and canapes, a hot or cold buffet, afternoon tea or dinner, The Little Kitchen Company team will ensure you and your guests are well looked after in a discreet, friendly, and professional way. The food is all lovingly made by hand, especially for your occasion and because Chesil House is licensed, it is easy to ‘raise a glass’ in honour or celebration.
The Chesil House gardens are a stunning oasis of tranquillity in the heart of Winchester, a real hidden gem and one of the City’s best kept secrets.
Private and secluded, the walled gardens bring a beautiful breath of fresh air at any time of the year. Whether you take a quiet stroll by the private tributary for contemplation or soak up their beauty from The Deck, the gentle sound of the River Itchen will always be with you.
With stunning views of the River Itchen and the Chesil House gardens, The Deck is a perfect space for taking time to reflect, have an informal conversation or just enjoy the unique vista below you.
On top of the ancient river wall, the glass balustrade provides uninterrupted views towards the weirs and the much loved riverside walk through Winchester.
Chesil Street (formerly Cheesehill Street) was an important approach into Winchester back in the Middle Ages through the East Gate which stood near the City Bridge and Mill. A building of some form has therefore stood on the site of Chesil House for hundreds of years.
With its mid 19th century façade and earlier foundations, Chesil House has been owned and occupied by the Steel family for four generations. Starting as carpenters and joiners, the business naturally grew into the well established family funeral directors, proudly serving Winchester and the wider Hampshire community since 1860.
Each generation of the Steel family have played their part in developing, restoring and refurbishing Chesil House to the unique and beautiful premises you see today.
